Dr.
Cosman is a medical attorney located in San Diego, California. President
of Medical Equity, Inc., a national medical law consultancy since 1980,
Madeleine is a popular lecturer worldwide on medical law and medical
ethics, appearing in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Africa, Israel,
and Western Europe as well as throughout America. Often on television, she
appeared on C-Span for a 60 minute presentation entitled: Who Owns Your
Body? A familiar figure on the medical and law lecture circuits as
keynote speaker at medical meetings and bar associations, she presents
Continuing Medical Education and Continuing Legal Education courses on
medical legislation, litigation, health policy, and medical and legal
ethics. She lectures for Cato Institute in Washington, and testifies
before Congress on medical law issues. She wrote her whimsically
illustrated ABCs of the Clinton Medical World for Congress in 1993.
Writing articles and books on medical law and related subjects since the 1960s, one of Madeleine's 15 published books was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and was a Book of the Month Club Dividend Selection. Her Selling the Medical Practice: the Physicians' and Surgeons' Guide (Bard Hall Press, 1988) was reviewed as the "Bible of the industry" and she wrote many essays in National Trial Lawyer on medical goodwill, medical practice valuation, medical finance, and why doctors hate lawyers. Until 1993, she was an Associate Editor of National Trial Lawyer. She writes for Fair$hare: The Matrimonial Law Monthly and wrote medical valuation chapters for Encyclopedia of Matrimonial Practice and Valuing Professional Practices and Licenses: A Guide for the Matrimonial Practitioner. Medical law and medieval culture are her intellectual passions. Her book Women at Work in Medieval Europe was published in New York in 2000, as was her dictionary of medieval culture, Medieval WordBook (1996). Both appeared in paperback in 2001. The dictionary is translated into Estonian. Several of her books are popular in Japanese. Her most acclaimed early book started with medical legislation and medieval law and became Fabulous Feasts: Medieval Cookery and Ceremony (George Braziller, 1976...2002), just reissued in a quarter century edition and still a popular gift book. Her forthcoming book is Who Owns Your Body? Holding a J.D. from Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City where she was a Jacob Burns Fellow, Madeleine is a member of the New York State Bar, New Jersey Bar, and the American Bar Association's Section on Health Law. She is a Barrister of the American Inns of Court, Arthur Vanderbilt Inn. A Barnard College graduate (1959), her Master's is from Hunter College (1960), and her Ph.D. from Columbia University (1964). Madeleine is Professor Emerita of City College of City University of New York. For 30 years she taught medical students medical law, medical business, and medical history, and as academic administrator directed from 1968 to 1993 the 15 department degree-granting Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies.
